Ibn Abbas reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “ Take advantage of five before five: your youth before your old age, your health before your illness, your riches before your poverty, your free time before your work, and your life before your death. ”

Some days ago, probably last week,  our beloved Dr. Mahfouz Adedimeji (ass. Prof) gave a sermon about five things Prophet Muhammad encourages man to take advantages of before the other five opposite of it comes. Like i have never heard the hadith before, it caught my attention so much that I've decided to write extensively about it.

*YOUTH BEFORE OLD AGE

Youth according to English dictionary is said to be the part of life after childhood. Islamically,  youthful time ranges, it can sometimes be measure by brain or thinking faculty. Basically, when a child could differentiate between the right and the wrong, and Probably from age 12. However,  youthful age is the time when man would feel he's free, perhaps naturally, it's time which silly blood floats through human's vein. One fact about this time is that people take it for granted, feeling as if such time would last forever. It's also the period when man would be capable of doing so many things for the sake of Allah.
It's common to hear a youth saying words which were regarded as procrastination,  'oh! I'll go to mosque tomorrow, oh! I'll start madrasah next year, or oh! I'll change for good tomorrow and words of that kind, whereas they are so strong to do all these things conviniently but they forget they are going to become weak one day.
Nevertheless, this youthful age as encouraged by prophet to take advantage of connotes not only the spiritual upliftment (regarding ibadāt)  but also the case of one's livelihood (regarding muamalāt) of man.  As far as prophet is concerned he wanted the youthful age to be used judiciously in all ramifications so that one won't end up regretting when he becomes weak to do things he's took for granted before.
One should be acquinted with the fact that one don't magically become prosper in life and hereafter, your youthful dos and don't becomes your habit and determines what you would be, take advantage of it.

*HEALTH BEFORE ILLNESS

Health is essential part of human existence, which without, man would continue to wallow in lots of pains. Their is no doubt that health has its other face known and illness and it's among things man would always experience in life, however,  one should take a great advantage of it before illness comes.  It's when one is healthy that he would be able to perform his obligation and voluntary acts and on the other way round if illness took over he wouldn't be able to. And their is no excuse before Allah, as He would ask you "have  I not given you the health to worship me?", health is therefore a kind of trust and we shall be questioned about how we use it. We're expected to use our health for goodness and to obey Allah by following his path as explained and expressed by Prophet Muhammad.

*RICHES BEFORE POVERTY

Their is no doubt that riches came from Allah upon whosoever he wishes to give among His slaves. However, in the context of this hadith taking advantage of riches can be in form of sadaqah and zakat,  as a matter of fact a soft word is regarded as sadaqah aswell.  There are millions of people in the world today that don’t even have a drop of clean water to drink, and they don’t know where their next meal will be coming from. These are the people that we need to be helping with our wealth. Even a small donation can go a long way.
Nevertheless,  rich personel should try as much as possible make the poor around them have the course to smile too some days.Allah says in Quran
‘The likeness of those who spend their money for Allah’s sake, is as the likeness of a grain (of corn), it grows seven ears, every single ear has a hundred grains, and Allah multiplies (increases the reward) for whom He wills, and Allah is All-Sufficient for His creatures needs, All Knower’.
(Al-Baqarah: 261)

  *FREE TIME BEFORE WORK

Time is something small on lips and in word but indeed it encompasses big things. Islam preaches that we should manage our time, it's encourage we spend our time to the course of Allah. However, we should utilise the time we have available to do as much good as we can, because before we know it, this time will have passed.
The concept of time is nothing to toy with in islam and it is so important in Islam that Allah swears by it in Qur’an:
‘By [evening) Time. Verily Man is in loss, except such as have faith and do good deeds, and [join together] in the mutual teaching of truth, of patience and constancy.’
(Surah Al-‘Asr)
In line with the above aayaat (verses), we have to discipline ourselves by giving value to the importance of time. We should be prompt in doing good deeds, which will increase our faith and subsequently enable us to gain Allah’s pleasure and mercy.

*LIFE BEFORE DEATH

Their is no doubt that we would one day exist no more. An example of death is sleeping but Allah returns whosoever he wishes soul back to make him awake.
Taking advantage of life should however prompt one to the establishment of good traits and devotional to the worship of Allah because after death their is no going back. Good things don’t just come to us – we have to strive for them, day in and day out. Whether we are at university or at work, or if we are raising a family, to excel at what we do, we know that we have to work hard, and the harder we work, the better the reward. Jannah is no exception to this. And we know that, if we strive hard enough, Allah will reward us with the ultimate prize.

In a nutshell, an hadith says thus
"‘A man shall be asked concerning five things on the Day of Resurrection: concerning his life, how he spent it; concerning his youth, how he grew old; concerning his wealth, how he acquired it and how he spent it; and what he did with the knowledge he had."
(Tirmidhi).

May Allah shower His blessings more on us and make ease religion practice for us.
