MONEY AND THE QUEST FOR IT; THE ROOT OF ALL EVIL
In the early time, our nation was not as corrupt as it seems to be today, this is due to the fact that money was not idolised and it was not the main goal of the past people. They've always quested for happiness and a well organised family living. They gave priority to a happy livelihood. Time flew and things changed, yesterday bicycle was the best transport means and today we have car which is suitable for all. The dynamism
of life changes the desire of human too. Today, the goal of everybody is making money 'legal or illegal' (slang in town) and everybody is dead of conscience as priority is given to money (i.e money equals happiness).
In the world today, the quest for money and money itself is one of the cankerworms that have eaten deep into the mind and caprices of humanity. Hence, A wise man should have money in his head but not in his heart.
Money is said to be root of all evil, however, I am not saying money is bad, money is a good thing but who is really in control? This question deserves to be pondered on. Ayn Rand said and I would like to quote him that:
"money is not only a tool, it will take you to wherever you wish but it will not replace you as the driver"
It's a glaring fact that humanity is mostly driven by money (materialism). Their desire to acquire money becomes the whole goal of their lives. The level of how materialistic everyone has become leads to indulgence in bad things. Nevertheless, the quest for wealth has attracted theft, online fraud, robbery, manipulating documents, and all sorts of evils. Perhaps, our society has been doomed, all because of materialism and consumerism. The alarming insecurity in the whole world today, Nigeria especially can easily be subjected to the extreme love and quest for money.
The evil of money can be addressed in various angles, it's all encompassing. Leaders who assumed power with several oath to citizens who voted them in became pompous, they've not only attained power, they rather have the power and the money as well. With the money they attained and embezzled from public pocket, they became un-stepped and they cheat rights of human to serve their personal interest. There's much to say about this, today's politics is not for people's service but for personal purse service.
Money does it all, as they say, best expresses the evil of the quest for money, students who ought to be busy with education believe money is mightier, perhaps we have graduates outside there walking street to street. It saddens with the public fund our government became drunk, blind and dumb that they raped the future of the called 'leaders of tommorrow' and our mouths have been shut. The consequence of challenging them will bring the wrath imbedded in having money.
In a very real sense, money should indeed be a tool to bind love within people, but we misused it henceforth.
The fact remains that we live to die, however, making money while alive simply means we live and make money, get thing we need with ease and finally we shall close our eyes and it would never open again as we shall say "bye" and leave the world and its ornaments which we have acquired. Life is too short to make money prior to the love of people.
I would like to sum this article up by the saying of a famous American author, Louisa May Alcott that goes thus:
"Money is the root of all evil, and yet it is such a useful root that we cannot get on without it any more that we can potatoes".
