MISPLACED PRIORITIES; NIGERIA AS A CASE STUDY

"Shall we all fold our hands and allow our best brains in the university wallow in abject poverty while we exalt frivolities which won't lead us anywhere"

INTRODUCTION

Misplaced priorities has been seen and explained in different perspective. However, it's a subjective term generally used to describe a person's actions and objectives based on values, beliefs and choices that are contrary to your own or those of the wider society to which they belong. Therefore, in this context "misplaced priorities" goes a wider range and could best be said to be attaching importance to that which does not worth it, else in a nutshell it simply means when you attend to a situation or an incident that is less important than another.
A saying in Yoruba that best explained this is:

         "gbigbe omo oba fun osun"

Misplacement of priorities has been a major problem militating against the dreamed developed country Nigeria and Nigerian had wished to attain, it's a disaster that chop off the development of every sector in Nigeria.

Educationally, it saddens that this sector had witness lot of degradation and it's still witnessing it. Imagine the best graduating students getting a meager and trashy sum of money while winner of an open TV porn earns millions of naira and some other prices, isn't this priority goes wrong?. How will a country develop when academic excellence wall is falling and immoralities are been sponsored, appreciated, and recognised above scale?

It's not a tale talk that the government are becoming involved in the sponsorship of this pageantry and sort of open porn, as they've failed to awards scholarships, no regular bursary and no commendation to best students. All these together has contributed to the decline in academic performance of  students at various level, all in the name  of misplaced priority and government negligence. Nobody wants to invest into education, and little people who did are not well appreciated, hence, immoralities take a full and firm ground.
I seems biased? No, I'm not going against pageantry, but that which ought to be preached and encouraged should be said aswell, imagine Nigeria making 1 out of 800 world best Universities.

Our economy is nothing to write home about, highest priority is given to petroleum when exist so many natural resources which if properly invested in, we would have experience growth in our economy and put end to the recession we are wallowing in. Billions of naira which is yearly spent by ministries and state governments could easily transform the bad economy from recession and alleviate from abject poverty if well managed. The people will benefit as against a select few benefitting unlawfully at the expense of all.

Nevertheless, religious serve a great misplaced priority in Nigeria. Since immemorial time, Religion has been known as a private matter, an act between individuals and a chosen deity (God or gods). It is with no doubt have a place  in the Constitution of Nigeria that, “The government of the federation or of a state shall not adopt any religion as a state religion.” but today we've several cases of a government choosen religion above the stipulated law.

Finally, it's about time priorities should be placed right where it should be in this country and then we can go off stagnation, else stagnation becomes a recurring decimal. It's therefore time for government, organisation, wealthy people, and private sector to get this nation moving by eradicating the cankerworm that stands to gain full ground in this nation. The harms misplaced priorities has caused is more destructive than that of corruption.

It's on this note, I would remark that Nigerian are still waiting for who would rewrite the sad story and make a new good life for all yet we ain't ready for truth and we pretend we don't know the truth. It's high time we put ban on misplaced priorities.
