PREAMBLE

All praise and adoration are directed toThe Almighty God, the creator and director of activities in Heaven and on Earth who has kept us alive, so far, to witness this day. We can't but continue to praise His holy name. I congratulate the fresh students here for making it into the University of ilorin. Particularly, I congratulate you for making it into the Faculty of Arts which we proudly refer to as "THE HEARTBEAT OF UNILORIN". As it is not automatic that everyone that starts a journey must finish the race, there is every reason to thank God that a journey, which started few years ago from common entrance, WAEC/NECO to UTME has reached a destination of glory; an admission into UNILORIN. I, therefore, heartily congratulate our freshmen for this feat. However, kindly note that this is just the beginning of a great journey.

INTELLECTUALISM AND ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE: A PRODUCT OF DISCIPLINE.

It is an incontrovertible truism that we are all born ignorant, we only have to work hard not to remain stupid. To be inoculated from stupidity is to be intellectually sound.

Instructively, one of the founding fathers' of America, Benjamin Franklin concluded that : 'AN INVESTMENT IN KNOWLEDGE PAYS THE BEST INTEREST'. Of course,  Intellectualism is the other halve of academic excellence and academic excellence informs our primary aim of being here. For one to achieve academic excellence, one must be intellectually sound.

To be intellectually sound is to be disciplined. It is only when one is disciplined that one does one's assignments and attend to one's academic needs which will eventually birth academic excellence/success. Like a line in one of the popular music track that's making the round goes: "IF WE NO BUY BENZ WETIN WE GAIN", permit me to appropriate it to " IF WE DO NOT ACHIEVE ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE WETIN WE GAIN"?

BE DIFFERENT, GO MAD

Someone noted that: "If you cannot be the best you will be among the rest". The truism in that saying is affirmed by a saying that goes thus: " If you want to be different you will have to do things differently ". In other words, you can't get an extraordinary result by doing things in an ordinary manner. As a result of that, be different, go MAD!

MAD as used in this context is a morphological process known as acronym. In its full form, it simply means Make(ing) A Difference.
" In this fast-paced world and its  rapid socio-political and economic changes creating new opportunities and at the same time blocking old ones, the way to stand out is to be outstanding and to be outstanding, you must make a difference. Meanwhile, making a difference is not necessarily doing extraordinary things, it is doing ordinary things extra-ordinarily and not just following the crowd". Says, Mahfouz Adedimeji. To affirm that submission, i will say, If you don't know where you are going to, they will lead you to their own destination and you'll get lost.

For a youth who wants to make a difference in a world that treats the poor, the weak and the under-achieving with hostile indifference, there are five things involved. The first point of these points is informed by a saying from the sagely SOCRATES who's goes thus: " MAN KNOW THYSELF". In other words, you have to know yourself. This self-knowledge would make you realise and tap your hidden energy, inner potentials and full capabilities in order to excel among your peers. You shoud not because your friend attends nigjt classes you also want to attend. What works for one person may not work for another. You must discover yourself.

Afterwards, you must believe in yourself even if others don’t believe in you. Just like my mantra during the last faculty electioneering process read: "BELIEVE!". It is when people lose faith in themselves that they find it difficult to find their feet and make a difference.  Of course, our mind is the battle ground where we win and lose battles of life. As such, do have a believe in yourself. Yes, You can do it!

Besides, you must control yourself. Self-control is an important factor to making a difference as you impose some standard on yourself and commit yourself to what is right even when it is not popular. We call it determination. As Rig Veda asserts, “THE MAIN FACTOR BEHIND SUCCESS IS SELF-CONTROL.” There are many distractions among us especially these days of internet-enabled gadgets, internet fraud, internet-enabled immoralities and you need self-control to retain your sanity.

Therefore, be disciplined. control yourself.
Meanwhile, you must exert yourself. Exerting yourself implies putting all your energy in your studies or what you do as all success derives from hard work. It is what you sow that you reap and it is what you plant that you harvest. Hard work will always earn you success as nothing succeeds like it. You cannot plant maize and yourself to harvest yam. There is no rat-run to success. Be diligent.

Finally, you must motivate  yourself. The only limit one has is the limit set for oneself. When your effort does not bring the expected quantum of outcome, you do not despair and you tell yourself that little progress is better than no progress.

In other words,to make a difference in the University,  you have to be DILIGENT, DISCIPLINED, DETERMINED, AND DEDICATED. Importantly, you'll have to avoid distraction.
It is worthy to note that PROMPT PREPARATION PREVENTS POOR PERFORMANCE. Should you follow the aforementioned nuggets; by the end of your programme at the university of Ilorin, you will be like the Pay-off of 7up drink: "THE DIFFERENCE WILL BE CLEAR". You will (stand out) be different from your peers.

Notably, my unadulterated appreciation goes to my parents for their unceasing prayers for me. Also, I can't but thank my darling friends who have always been supportive. Unarguably, Assoc.Prof Mahfouz Adedimeji remains my academic father and mentor: I hugely thank him too. The members of the CEC and the SRC arms of the association have been the rocks of this administration. I'm deeply grateful to them all.

Cummulatively, Sefi Atta has the right words here: EVERYTHING GOOD WILL COME. Therefore, be DIFFERENT. Give no excuse. Go MAD!
Once again, you are all welcome. Many thanks.

Folorunso, Fatai Adisa.
Executive PRESIDENT, Faculty Of Arts Students' Association, UNILORIN.
